Where and How to Get Vaccines

Where and How to Get Vaccines

Congratulations on making the choice to protect your child’s health with vaccinations! There are many resources to help you find vaccines for your child.

Remember that your child’s physician or healthcare provider can administer all recommended immunizations as part of their regular care. Most health insurance plans are required to cover preventive services, including vaccines, for children and teens at no cost. (No cost means without a copay, deductible, or coinsurance.) There are also many free and low-cost options for getting vaccines if you do not have a healthcare provider or insurance.

My child does not have insurance. How can I get them vaccinated?

No child should miss out on the benefits of vaccination because of cost barriers. Even if your child does not have insurance, they can still be vaccinated. Vaccines for Children (VFC) is a federally-funded program that provides free vaccines for low-income or uninsured children. To be eligible for the program, your child must be younger than 19 years old. They must also be Medicaid-eligible, uninsured, underinsured, Native American, or Alaskan native. If your child meets these criteria, they can get vaccines at no cost from a doctor or clinic enrolled in VFC. In Colorado, there are over 600 VFC-enrolled vaccine providers. Nationally, there are over 40,000 VFC-enrolled providers.

Where can I find a VFC vaccine provider?

You can get VFC vaccines from any healthcare provider enrolled in the program. Below are some types of providers and locations that provide VFC vaccines:

Federally Qualified Health Centers

Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) are clinics that provide complete primary care services regardless of a family’s ability to pay. All community health centers offer VFC vaccines to eligible children. Find a Health Center near you.

Local Health Departments

Most local health departments offer free vaccines to VFC-eligible children. Some also offer vaccines to privately-insured children and children with Medicaid. Some, but not all, departments can vaccinate children with private insurance. Find your closest local health department.

School-Based Health Centers

School-Based Health Centers (SBHCs) are clinics that offer preventive services in school settings. Many SBHCs offer VFC vaccines to eligible students. There are nearly 4,000 SBHCs in the U.S. Visit your state’s health department website to learn more about the SBHCs in your state.

Rural Health Clinics

Rural Health Clinics (RHCs) are federally designated and located in rural areas with scarce healthcare resources. These clinics may offer VFC vaccines. Learn more about RHCs in your state.

Private Practice Doctors’ Offices

Many pediatricians and family doctors in private practices offer free VFC vaccines to eligible children. However, some providers may charge an office visit fee and/or a fee to administer each shot. The fee must be waived if you are unable to pay. Before scheduling an appointment, ask the office if they offer VFC vaccines and what additional fees may be charged.

My child has insurance, but the plan doesn’t cover vaccines. What can I do?

Underinsurance means that your child is covered by an insurance plan that does not include any vaccines, does not cover specific vaccines, or partially covers vaccines. If your child is underinsured, they are eligible to get VFC vaccines only at Federally Qualified Health Centers, Rural Health Centers, and some local health departments.

What are low- and no-cost vaccine options specific to Colorado?
